The Voice of Denali – KRFF 89.1 FM is a culturally-focused, public radio presence in Alaska’s Interior. A direct outgrowth of the Athabascan Fiddlers Association and its mission of sharing, perpetuating, and preserving Athabascan culture, traditions, and values, through presentation, documentation, and education.
Today, as the Voice of Denali, we are able to do this every day, 365 days a year via a fully-functioning public broadcasting radio station, one that exists within the context of utilizing the airwaves to broadcast music and information connecting people across Alaska’s vast Interior region. Offering news, information, emergency services and entertainment that is uniquely local.
Ours is a community-based, noncommercial radio station that operates at 10,000 watts, broadcasting throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough while streaming throughout the Interior and the nation.
Since our “on-air” date of November 8 - 2014, KRFF (FM) has featured relevant cultural and community events including:
The World Eskimo Indian Olympics as well as, live and recorded broadcasts of the Athabascan Fiddlers Festival,
KRFF (FM) provided a non-partisan forum for politicians and community leaders to discuss local issues on-air during fall of 2014, and
One of the most professionally rewarding programing we have done thus far:
Inviting Elders from throughout the Interior to tell their stories and sing their songs on-air.
The results: opportunities to capture and preserve local history while providing often salient information to our listeners on topics ranging from education to managing resources during lean times. These are just a few examples of The Voice of Denali providing: “Local Radio for Local People.” Our experience of hosting the Athabascan Fiddlers Festival these last 32 years providing us with a strong foundation in gathering and responding to the listening tastes of our community.
American Indians or Alaska Natives owned /operated 12 stations (0.3 percent) in 2013, a fraction that, without question, would only be positively impacted by ensuring The Voice of Denali, KRFF (FM) a place on the airwaves. Our own goals includes creating opportunities to ensure more minorities an opportunity to be on-the-air, professionally in both artistic and technical capacities.
