Our Roots

Voice of Denali was born from a legacy of music, tradition, and the Interior's indigenous culture.

Athabascan Fiddlers Association

Voice of Denali was created by the Athabascan Fiddlers Association (AFA). The AFA is renowned for organizing the annual music festival in Fairbanks, Alaska—a cornerstone celebration that brings together hundreds of people from across the Interior for four days of cultural and musical celebration.

While the festival is a time for musicians to play the best music around, it is primarily a space for sharing, helping the AFA meet its mission of cultural preservation through song and community.

Beyond the Fiddlers Festival

While the Music Festival is our most well-known event, our mission is far more expansive. The festival is just one mechanism for sharing, perpetuating, and preserving the culture of the Interior’s indigenous peoples.

Recognizing this, the AFA Board of Directors envisioned a bigger future. The Voice of Denali radio station was established to provide a sustainable, year-round, culturally-focused public radio presence in Alaska’s Interior.

"Connecting people from all across Alaska’s vast Interior region to share, perpetuate, and preserve Athabascan culture and traditions."
